About Budgetsplit

Budgetsplit is a website and a mobile app that helps you and the people you choose keep track of shared money: income, expenses, budgets and who owes whom. It is run by [your full legal name] ("we", "us"), [postal address where you can be served]. You can reach us at contact@budgetsplit.app.

Budgetsplit records what you enter. It does not hold or move money, it is not a bank or a payment service, and it does not give financial, tax or legal advice.

Agreeing to these terms

By creating an account or using Budgetsplit you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Budgetsplit.

We may update these terms. We will tell you in advance, in the app or by email, about any change that matters. If you keep using Budgetsplit after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms. If you do not accept a change, you can delete your account.

Who can use it

You must be 18 or older. We ask you to confirm this when you sign up.

You need an account to use Budgetsplit. Give us accurate information, keep your sign-in details private, and do not share your account with anyone else. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has used it, change your password and tell us straight away.

Personal spaces and groups

You can have one personal space that only you can see. Nobody else, including the owner of any group you are in, can open it.

You can also create family or friends groups, and join a group with an invite code. Everything added to a group is visible to every member of that group: amounts, dates, categories, notes, who paid, who shares an expense, payments between members, and each member's name. Only add what you are happy for them to see.

The person who creates a group is its owner, and a group always has exactly one owner. The owner can make other members admins, and take the role away again. Owners and admins run the group: they can change its settings, add categories and budgets, create a new invite code, add and remove members, and delete other people's entries. Only the owner can delete the group, change its currency, or choose admins. Anyone who has a valid invite code can join until it expires or a new code is made, so only share it with people you trust. Members and admins can leave a group at any time. An owner cannot leave a group they own. An owner can delete the group instead, which removes it and everything in it for every member and cannot be undone (please download what you need first). Or an owner can delete their account (see "Ending your account"), in which case the group passes to another member who has an account.

In a group you use for budgets, such as a family group, you can also add people who do not have an account, for example your children. You add only a name. They never sign in, and the group's owner and admins manage them. Only add someone if you are their parent or legal guardian, or are otherwise entitled to keep these records for them, and add no more than you need to. You can remove them from the group at any time, and their name is then replaced with "Former member".

Free and Plus

Budgetsplit is free to use. Some features need Plus, for example more groups and more people, admins, weekly check-ins, repeating entries, and trips and events. The app shows which ones. When a group's owner has Plus, everyone in that group can use its Plus features.

During early access we give Plus free for 12 months. It ends by itself after that: we do not ask for payment details for it, nothing is charged, and everything you added stays. If we start charging for Plus, we will tell you the price and the terms before anything is charged, and you only pay if you choose to.

What you enter

You keep the rights in the information you add. You are responsible for it. Do not enter anything unlawful, and do not enter other people's private information unless you have the right to.

You give us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide permission to store, process and show what you enter to you and to the members of your groups, and only so that we can run Budgetsplit for you. We do not use it for anything else.

Balances and totals

Budgetsplit works out totals, budgets and balances from what people enter. We do not check entries against any bank account, and we cannot know whether an entry is right. Look over the figures before you rely on them, for example before you settle up with someone.

A payment recorded in Budgetsplit is only a note that a payment happened. Budgetsplit does not make or check payments. What people owe each other in real life is a matter between them.

Paying each other

If the people in a group choose to share how they like to be paid, such as a PayPal.me name, a UPI ID or bank details, Budgetsplit shows them to the other members of that group. Whoever owes them money sees buttons that open PayPal or a UPI app with the amount filled in, or the bank details to copy. Only add payment details that are your own.

The payment itself happens in that service, between you and the other person, under that service's own terms. Budgetsplit does not make, receive, hold or check payments, and it is not part of any payment. Check the name and the amount before you confirm a payment there. If money goes to the wrong person, contact your payment service: we cannot get it back.

PayPal, UPI and the names of other payment services belong to their owners. Budgetsplit is not connected with or endorsed by them.

Using Budgetsplit fairly

You agree not to:

• break the law, or use Budgetsplit to harass or deceive anyone; • try to read, change or delete data that is not yours, or get around any limit or security measure (including guessing invite codes); • probe, scan or test Budgetsplit for weaknesses without our written permission (if you find a security problem, please tell us at contact@budgetsplit.app); • overload or interfere with the service, or use bots or scripts to create accounts or collect data; • copy, sell or take apart Budgetsplit, except where the law allows it.

Do not add anything to Budgetsplit that:

• belongs to someone else and that you have no right to use; • is obscene or pornographic, harms children, or invades someone's privacy; • harasses or insults anyone because of their gender, race or ethnicity, or stirs up hatred between groups because of religion or caste; • encourages money laundering or gambling; • infringes a patent, trade mark, copyright or other right; • deceives people about where it comes from, or is false or misleading on purpose; • pretends to be someone else; • threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India or any other country, friendly relations between countries or public order, or incites a crime; • contains a virus or other harmful code; • breaks any law.

We may remove what breaks these rules, and suspend or close the account that added it (see "Ending your account").

Reporting a problem

If something in Budgetsplit breaks these terms or the law, or someone misuses your information, tell us. Use Send feedback in the app or on the website, or write to contact@budgetsplit.app, and say which group and entry it is about and why. You can write to us in English or German. Our grievance officer is [full name of the grievance officer for India].

We confirm a complaint within 24 hours and decide on it within 15 days. If you ask us to remove something that breaks the rules above, we act within 72 hours, and within 24 hours if it pretends to be you. We tell you what we decided and why.

If you are in India and disagree with our decision, you can appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee within 30 days.

Other services

If you sign in with Google, Google's own terms and privacy policy apply to that sign-in. Downloading the app from an app store is also covered by that store's terms. We are not responsible for those services.

Availability and changes

We work to keep Budgetsplit running and safe, but it is a new service and we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change, add or remove features, and we will try to give notice of anything significant.

Please download a copy of your data from time to time (Settings, Download my data). It is yours, and it is the best protection against something going wrong.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings. For your security you must have signed in recently. Deleting is permanent. What happens to your data is described in the Privacy Policy and on the account deletion page.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other people or the service at risk. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why first and give you the chance to download your data.

Our rights

Budgetsplit, its name, logo, design and software belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable permission to use Budgetsplit as these terms allow. That is all we give you. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.

No promises beyond the law

As far as the law allows, Budgetsplit is provided "as it is". We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that it suits a particular purpose. We are not responsible for decisions you make using it.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights that the law gives you as a consumer.

Limits on our responsibility

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes responsibility that cannot be limited or excluded by law, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for intentional or grossly negligent harm.

We are fully responsible for harm caused intentionally or by gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the Product Liability Act, and where we have given a guarantee.

If we breach an essential contractual obligation through slight negligence (an obligation that makes it possible to run Budgetsplit properly in the first place, and that you can normally rely on), our responsibility is limited to the damage that is typically foreseeable for a service like this. Otherwise we are not responsible for slightly negligent breaches. Please download a copy of your data from time to time, as it is the best protection against loss.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of Germany. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country. Otherwise the courts of Germany decide disputes about these terms.
